Ellen M O'Neil

Among the many outstanding alumnae of Manchester High School Central, Ellen M. O'Neil stands apart as an athlete and a coach, and distinguishes herself in both arenas. She began her career while at Central, winning four state titles in Indoor Track and was named Athlete of the Year. She was also the Outdoor State and New England Champion in the two-mile race. As a testament to her all-round athleticism, she was named to the All-State Basketball Team earning the MVP designation in the Alhambra All-State Basketball Championship. Additionally, she captained both the Indoor Track Team and the Basketball Team in the same season. Upon leaving Central, Coach O'Neil entered Dartmouth College and again mounted an impressive string of accolades. She won six Ivy League track titles, captained the Track Team, and was the first Dartmouth woman runner to qualify for the NCAA championships. Upon graduation, Coach O'Neil returned to Central where she coached the Cross Country Team to four consecutive New England Championships, and saw them nationally ranked for three of the four years she worked with them. For the succeeding ten years, Coach O'Neil assumed the Head Cross Country/Assistant Track Coach positions at Dartmouth, where she coached twenty-eight Ivy League Champions, fifteen All-Americans, and eleven school record holders. Her Cross Country teams won four consecutive Ivy League titles, qualified for the national championships on six occasions, and had top five finishes at the NCAAs in two of those years. She was awarded the District I NCAA Coach of the Year, and the following year was selected to coach the US Junior Team at the World Cross Country Championships in Belfast, Ireland. Currently, Coach O'Neil holds the Head Cross Country Coach position at Smith College. For her outstanding athleticism and her devotion to helping young athletes develop their strengths, Ellen M. O'Neil is inducted into the Manchester High School Central Hall of Fame.
